How to Change Your MTU Setting on a PC

The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) is the maximum size of a data packet that a network router can receive. Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP use a default MTU size of 1,500 bytes for all Point-to-Point Protocol connections and a default MTU size of 1,400 bytes for all Virtual Private Network connections. When the size of a packet that a network router receives is larger than the MTU, it returns the "destination unreachable" message to the sending host. If the current MTU on a PC makes it difficult for users to access required applications, you can change the MTU setting on your PC.
